Burnside West veteran Carl Huyser has become just the second player to play 300 games for the club.
Huyser recently joined former fast bowler Scott Inglis, who took the most wickets for Burnside in their history with 614 scalps.
Huyser signed up with Burnside West after moving to Christchurch from South Africa in 2008 and has become their third highest run scorer behind Jack Kerr and Brian Hastings. He has assisted the team winning four trophies, the OEM Audio One-Day Championship in 2018, 2022 and 2024 and the two-day competition last season.
When asked about his achievements he downplayed them.
“For me the things that are special are more the friendships you make and the people you play with” he said.
Under Huyser’s captaincy the club won its first trophy in 27 years. He was captain from 2017-2021. Last year he helped the team to their first two-day title since 1991.
Huyser said those were his special moments from his 16 years at the club.
Huyser now coaches the Premier team and mostly opens the batting.
“When I came fresh off the boat, the club helped me find my belonging in New Zealand and just find a community. I feel like giving back to the club as they have given so much to me.”
